The Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, the same federal panel that just came out with the newest and greatest list of health guidelines is at it again. This time, they’ve decided to add environmental impact to their list of characteristics when deciding on healthy eating and living guidelines.
The news that has the meat industry up in arms is that the panel recently said that a vegan diet is what’s best for the planet. They also identified beef, cheese, milk and seafood as having the greatest impact on the environment.
The panel’s view, however, is more of balance and moderation. When it comes to health and environmental impact, they recommend a diet lower in animal protein and higher in plant foods and nuts.
So what is the best diet for humans and the planet? It seems like this topic could be argued ad nauseam, however, only time will tell how much a decrease in our dependence on meat will impact the environment. Everyone’s opinion will continue to differ based upon ideas, beliefs and self-interest, but it’s important to understand that at the end of the day, a healthy diet for humans and the environment needs to be a priority moving forward.
